Classic Italian Tiramisu

Ingredients:
- 6 large egg yolks
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 1/4 cups mascarpone cheese
- 1 3/4 cups heavy cream
- 2 cups espresso or strong coffee, cooled
- 1/4 cup coffee liqueur (optional)
- 40-50 ladyfingers (Savoiardi)
- Unsweetened cocoa powder for dusting
- Dark chocolate shavings for garnish (optional)
Instructions:
- Prepare the Mascarpone Mixture: In a medium bowl, whisk the egg yolks and sugar together until pale and fluffy. Gently fold in the mascarpone cheese until smooth and creamy.
- Whip the Cream: In another bowl, whip the heavy cream until stiff peaks form. Gently fold the whipped cream into the mascarpone mixture until fully incorporated.
- Mix the Coffee: Combine the cooled espresso with coffee liqueur (if using) in a shallow dish. Quickly dip each ladyfinger into the coffee mixture, ensuring they are soaked but not soggy.
- Assemble the Tiramisu: In a large rectangular dish, arrange a layer of the soaked ladyfingers. Spread half of the mascarpone cream mixture evenly over the ladyfingers. Repeat with another layer of ladyfingers and the remaining mascarpone cream.
- Chill and Serve: Cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight. Just before serving, dust the top with cocoa powder and add dark chocolate shavings if desired.
Notes:
Tiramisu can be made a day in advance, allowing the flavors to meld perfectly. For a non-alcoholic version, omit the coffee liqueur. Serve chilled.
