Stuffed Cabbage Rolls

Ingredients:
- 1 large head of cabbage
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1/2 lb ground pork
- 1/2 cup uncooked rice
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp pepper
- 1/4 tsp paprika
- 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
- 1 can (15 oz) diced tomatoes
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1/2 tsp dried thyme
- 1/4 tsp allspice
Instructions:
- Prepare the Cabbage: Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Carefully remove the core from the cabbage. Place the whole head of cabbage into the boiling water for 5-7 minutes to soften the leaves. Remove the cabbage from the water and let it cool. Peel off the large leaves and set aside.
- Prepare the Filling: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, rice, onion, garlic, egg, salt, pepper, and paprika. Mix until well combined.
- Make the Sauce: In a saucepan, combine the tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, sugar, thyme, and allspice. Bring to a simmer and let cook for 10 minutes. Set aside.
- Stuff the Cabbage Rolls: Lay a cabbage leaf on a flat surface. Place about 2 tablespoons of the filling at the base of the leaf. Fold the sides over the filling and roll it up tightly, like a burrito. Repeat with the remaining leaves and filling.
- Cook the Rolls: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). In a large baking dish, spread a thin layer of the tomato sauce. Place the stuffed cabbage rolls seam-side down in the dish. Pour the remaining sauce over the top.
- Bake: Cover the dish with foil and bake for 1.5 hours. Remove the foil during the last 15 minutes to allow the top to brown slightly. Serve the cabbage rolls with extra sauce spooned over them.
Notes:
For a vegetarian version, substitute the ground meat with cooked lentils or mushrooms and skip the egg.
